Mike Zimmer’s move to the Cowboys as their new defensive coordinator has been finalized, confirming earlier reports of his hiring. The agreement came after a brief period of uncertainty, with Rex Ryan also considered for the position.

Zimmer, aged 67, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously spent 13 years with the Cowboys under four different head coaches. He expressed his excitement about rejoining the organization and working alongside head coach Mike McCarthy, whom he holds in high regard.

Having most recently served as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2014 to 2021, Zimmer led the team to three playoff appearances and an NFC Championship Game. However, he is perhaps best known for his time with the Cowboys, where he initially served as an assistant coach before eventually becoming the defensive coordinator in 2000.

Zimmer’s defensive units have consistently performed well throughout his coaching career, frequently ranking in the top 10 in both yards and points allowed. He now takes over the defensive coordinator role from Dan Quinn, who departed to become the head coach of the Washington Commanders.
