Report: Former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney pulls out of new job after ‘painful’ update
Originally scheduled to make his BBC debut on Saturday night’s Match Of The Day, former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney was forced to cancel his appearance due to an ailment he sustained while on vacation with his family.
Following his time as manager of DC United, Rooney was fired by Birmingham City after a catastrophic short term. Since coming back to England, he has been unemployed and has dabbled in some punditry work with TNT Sports. As he puts it, he has wanted to be on MOTD and provide analysis ever since he was a young boy.
Rooney just suffered a back injury while traveling with his family, so for the time being, he will have to wait for his debut. When Rooney is ready and able to resume work, it’s anticipated that the BBC would extend an invitation for him to appear on the program as soon as possible.
“I’m sad not to be making my @BBCMOTD show debut tonight; I’ve wanted to do this since I was tiny,” Rooney wrote on social media. “Unfortunately, while on vacation with my family, I suffered a terrible back injury. However, I am eager to rejoin the squad soon. I hope tonight’s show goes well for @GaryLineker and the boys, and I’ll see you soon.”
Pride Park was Rooney’s first managerial experience in England before to his appointment by Blues in October. Rooney had recently left DC United in the Major League Soccer (MLS). Before taking the position full-time, he led the team alongside Liam Rosenior, Shay Given, Justin Walker, and Philip Cocu after the latter’s dismissal in November 2020.
At first, Rooney was able to lead the Rams out of danger, but his play declined in the middle of the season, and despite a thrilling match with Sheffield Wednesday on the last day, they managed to avoid relegation. The summer after exposed the club’s off-field problems, and even with Rooney’s best efforts, the team was fighting for its life before a ball was ever kicked. In summer 2022, he tendered his resignation.
