FanDuel has released its odds for the 2024 Big Ten championship, and Penn State football is positioned as the team with the fourth-highest likelihood of winning in the expanded 18-team Big Ten.

Under the leadership of James Franklin, Penn State football has displayed remarkable consistency, securing 10 victories in the previous season. Despite their consistent performance, some argue that the Nittany Lions were often regarded as the third-best team in the Big Ten East, a division that no longer exists.

With the introduction of the 12-team playoff format, Penn State football would have qualified for the playoffs in both the 2023 and 2022 seasons. However, the question arises whether replicating this success will be achievable for the Nittany Lions in 2024.

While the defense faces uncertainties due to the departure of standout talents like Chop Robinson and Kalen King to the NFL draft, Penn State football boasts one of the best running back tandems in college football with Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen.

Despite these strengths, significant uncertainties loom over the team, particularly in the areas of quarterback and head coach. James Franklin, despite numerous victories, has also faced setbacks in crucial games. The former five-star quarterback, Drew Allar, showcased impressive numbers last season but struggled against Ohio State and Michigan when it mattered most.

Josh Pate of 247 Sports has labeled Penn State football as one of the biggest mysteries of the upcoming season. He notes the team’s stability beneath Ohio State and Michigan but points out the challenges, such as replacing both coordinators. The defensive coordinator position has been filled by Tom Allen, while the offensive coordinator role is now occupied by Andy Kotelnicki from Kansas. The adjustment to a new offensive approach for Drew Allar adds another layer of uncertainty, with hopes that the offense can improve from its subpar performance in the previous year. The stability of the program is acknowledged, but the upcoming spring football season will be crucial in addressing various positions and filling key gaps.
