As the West Bromwich Albion team gets ready for what looks to be a play-off spot, captain Jed Wallace has disclosed that Carlos Corberan is a “great manager.”

The West Midlands team is eight points ahead of seventh place in the Championship and is currently riding a six-game winning streak. It appears quite likely that they will finish in the top six. Opta’s most recent predictions state that West Brom’s chances of finishing the season outside of the play-off spots are only 2.8%.

After taking over at a side that was on the verge of relegation last season, Corerban managed to lead West Bromwich Albion to within three points of the play-offs. The Baggies are taking it a step farther this time.

Third and fourth will be West Brom’s hardest challenge. Depending on how the automatic promotion battle plays out, Corberan’s team may need to defeat either Leeds United, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, or Southampton in order to make their Premier League debut for the first time since 2021.

However, club captain Wallace thinks that having a coach like Corberan on the sidelines gives his team an advantage in the competition. The playwright stated in a recent interview that [quotes via Birmingham Live]:

“I doubt he could have more of a competitive advantage even if he tried.

“He’s got crazy motivation. I concur that Huddersfield wasn’t lucky in that match. He’s a great manager in my opinion, and I don’t think anyone is deserving of the opportunity to manage in a higher level than him. Although there is still a lot of football to be played, consider the manager you would like to see in a play-off campaign.

“He’s the manager you want as the season gets close to the end. He’ll probably watch every game the other play-off teams have watched in the last two years, and we’d have the perfect strategy for it. You can see that it’s impossible not to go with him,” Wallace went on.

“The team we have—the management, the medical staff, the chefs—go above and beyond for us, so you have every chance to perform well here. You won’t always be at the top of your game, but you can see how hard we try to improve both individually and as a team. We have every opportunity to perform well.

Author’s Perspective

Huddersfield Town lost to Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest in the play-off final in 2022, despite Corberan’s leadership. But after leaving the Yorkshire squad that summer, the Terriers found themselves in back-to-back relegation battles, demonstrating just how much better the team was under the Spaniard.

Even if the Baggies may not make the Premier League this year, Corberan has established himself as one of the best coaches in the Championship during his tenures at Huddersfield and West Bromwich Albion.
