Winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing of Derby County has now given an explanation for his decision to sign a new deal at Pride Park.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s game-winning goal against Cambridge United gave Derby their first footing in the Championship.

The Rams defeated the Redskins 1-0 in a close game to create a new club record for the most away victories in a single season (13) and Mendez-Laing’s goal and assist total to reach 25.

The 32-year-old rounded the goalie and tapped into an empty net to complete an incredible Louie Sibley pass.

Given that Mendez-Laing broke the club record for most assists and was named to the League One Team of the Season, it seemed appropriate that he would score their most important goal during the promotion chase.

Several Championship clubs, such as Birmingham and Hull City, noticed his incredible form during the January transfer window and expressed interest in the jet-heeled winger.

He swiftly put a stop to rumors, though, by agreeing to a new contract that would keep him in Pride Park through the summer of 2026.

Why did Nathaniel Mendez-Laing decide to dedicate his future to Derby County?

Mendez-Laing had the option to leave in January and join a Championship team, which would have ensured playing in the lower divisions of the football league.

Having previously played a key role in Cardiff City’s elevation to the Premier League, his performance justifies a second opportunity at a higher position in the organization.

Because they had seen some of their finest players go in the past, Derby fans were thrilled to hear that the strong winger had signed a new deal at Pride Park.

Mendez-Laing has given an explanation for his January decision in the wake of his 100th game with the team.

Mendez-Laing told RamsTV, “It is something I am proud of and hopefully there’s many more to come.” I see a genuine sense of unity among all the employees at Pride Park and Moore Farm, including the coaches, players, and spectators.

There is nothing more I could want for; it’s a place where I feel truly at ease and settled. I adore the club and everything about it, and I feel really at home there overall. And when you’re in a better place, it does help with your on-field performances.

If The Rams defeat relegated Carlisle United on Saturday and manage to salvage at least a point, Mendez-Laing will be rewarded for his devotion.

As a striker, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has been exceptional.

After witnessing his team endure a string of injuries, Warne overcame hardship by rotating players, with Mendez-Laing playing as a striker and Éiran Cashin filling in as a left-back on a few occasions.

It has been a great idea to use Mendez-Laing next to James Collins as a striker. It has brought out the best in the Guatemalan and moved him closer to the objective.

Additionally, it has provided Warne with a backup plan in case Dwight Gayle doesn’t arrive in February.

Mendez-Laing has flourished in the center forward position despite being a superb winger; his goal on Saturday was his first in 12 games.

The forward for Derby will be hoping to work some more magic against Carlisle to propel his team into the Championship.
