While the Baggies are currently quietly making their way into the Championship playoff mix, West Bromwich Albion is fervently dreaming of returning to the promised land of the Premier League.

Looking at the current second-tier standings, Carlos Corberan’s club appears safe in fifth place. The Spanish manager in the Hawthorns dug-out is confident in his ability to rely on a number of first-team players to continue producing success even as the pressure mounts.

However, there are a few players in the West Midlands who are currently merely in the background and are costing the Championship team money because they don’t play frequently.

Nathaniel Chalobah’s wage at West Brom

If you scratch the surface, Nathaniel Chalobah may have played in 30 games for the Baggies, but the vast majority of those minutes have mostly come from the bench. In fact, the former Chelsea youth product has only started six of those contests, averaging a pitiful 27 minutes a game. Given that he plays in the shadow of Okay Yokuslu and Alex Mowatt in the holding midfield positions, his salary is somewhat disproportionate.Chalobah-West-Brom

Chalobah earns a substantial £20,000 a week, according to Capology, even though he hasn’t started for the West Midlands team since mid-February against Plymouth Argyle. He has also only been on the bench in West Brom’s last two Championship games.

The 29-year-old midfielder’s salary package is disproportionate when you look at others who are making less than him, particularly when you consider that Alex Palmer, who has the second-most clean sheets this season in the second division, only makes half as much as Chalobah.

Nathaniel Chalobah’s wage compared to the West Brom squad

In spite of Chalobah’s higher salary of £20k, Palmer only makes £10.9k, which is shocking given how important the Baggies goalkeeper has been to his team this year.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper has made a combined ten saves in his last two Championship outings, only conceding one in the process as Corberan’s men romped home to 4-1 and 2-0 wins respectively.

Reliable full-backs Conor Townsend and Darnell Furlong make £11.5k and £18.4k per week respectively, despite making 76 appearances in all competitions this season. It’s amazing that Palmer isn’t the only important first-team player who feels radically underpaid right now.

Chalobah’s deal with West Brom expires this summer, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the former Chelsea player left to find a less expensive successor.

West Brom’s top five earners – 2023/24
1. Adam Reach £40k per week
2. Daryl Dike £32.3k per week
3. Jed Wallace £25k per week
4. Okay Yokuslu £25k per week
5. Alex Mowatt £22.8k per week

Chalobah narrowly misses inclusion in the top five West Brom earners, as noted above, with Mowatt earning only £2.8k more per week despite being a consistent starter in Corberan’s lineups.

Adam Reach and Daryl Dike, who both play for the Baggies and earn exorbitant salaries despite no longer being key players due to injury concerns and stronger players taking their place, will undoubtedly be afraid of incurring the same fate as Chalobah.
