Former seahawks $39 million starter predicted to sign with lions

The Seattle Seahawks made significant changes to their defense after hiring new head coach Mike Macdonald. In March, they released safety Quandre Diggs, who still had one year left on his $39 million contract. Diggs was owed a $10.4 million salary for the upcoming season, with a cap hit of $21.2 million. The move cleared $11 million in cap space for the Seahawks in 2024.

Two months later, Diggs remains a free agent. However, Randy Mueller of The Athletic predicts that he will ultimately return to his former team, the Detroit Lions.

Mueller wrote, “I actually think a return to the Motor City, where he spent his first five years in the league, would make some sense. The Lions have remade their secondary, especially at corner, and a veteran communicator could be just what the doctor ordered to bring the back end together.”

During his tenure in Seattle, Diggs started 72 games over four-plus seasons and registered 95 total tackles, 5 passes defensed, and 1 interception in the 2023 season. He tallied a total of 18 interceptions during his time with the Seahawks.

Diggs was originally selected by the Lions in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL draft. However, things soured between Diggs and the Lions after Matt Patricia took over as head coach in 2018.

The trade to Seattle in October 2019 came as a surprise to many, including Diggs, who said he was initially “blindsided” by the decision. Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, Diggs stated, “I think it was more of just a control thing. Them wanting to control the locker room. Control the locker room, control voices in the locker room.”

After his release from the Seahawks, there has been speculation about a possible return to Detroit, and former Lions tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison even encouraged Diggs to come back to Detroit in a social media post.

However, a return to Seattle seems unlikely after the Seahawks signed safeties K’Von Wallace and Rayshawn Jenkins in free agency.
