Everton, Derby County, and Birmingham City are at the center of this £6.7 billion “tug of war.”
A rumor claims that former Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney is in demand for a new position.
According to The Sun, Rooney is at the center of a “tug of war” between TNT and Sky Sports. Both broadcasters are vying for his services as a “top pundit” for the 2024–2025 season after paying £6.7 billion to stream games from 2025 to 2029.
Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher, Paul Merson, and Roy Keane are among the celebrities who appear on Sky Sports’ coverage. Rio Ferdinand, Peter Crouch, and Joe Cole are on TNT in the interim. According to reports, Rooney has positive viewer feedback and is “extremely highly respected” by TV producers.
Rooney is reportedly undecided about spending a season as a pundit, though. He is thought to maintain ambitions of returning to the dugout despite his ill-fated tenure with Blues.
Rooney was in charge for 15 matches, taking over from John Eustace who had the team in the play-offs at the time of his sacking. Following Rooney’s dismissal, they fell to 20th place, six points above the relegation zone. He oversaw just two wins throughout his stint in the dugout, and scooped up 10 points from a possible 45.
Since his departure from St Andrew’s, he has been on Gary Neville’s podcast the Overlap, as well as doing some punditry work for the BBC for their FA Cup coverage. Rooney was again on TNT Sport in March, sharing his advice during the match between two of his former clubs Manchester United and Everton. Should he not find a career in football management, it’s likely that he will be with the BBC for their coverage of EURO 2024.
