According to Arnold Bruggink, FC Twente’s director of football, the club has not received any communication from Rangers regarding a potential deal for Gijs Smal during the upcoming summer transfer window. Despite ongoing speculation surrounding Smal’s future, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current season and no agreement reached for an extension, Rangers have not made any official contact with Twente.

Reports suggest that Rangers are considering Smal as one of several options to potentially replace Borna Barisic, whose contract is also nearing its expiration. However, as of now, there has been no direct approach from Rangers to Twente regarding the Dutch defender.

This lack of communication suggests that while Smal’s future remains uncertain, Rangers have not yet initiated formal discussions or negotiations with Twente regarding a potential transfer.

Arnold Bruggink, the director of football at FC Twente, has provided an update regarding discussions with Gijs Smal regarding a contract extension. Bruggink stated that they are still in talks with Smal about extending his contract and emphasized that they have not ruled out the possibility of him signing a new deal. He mentioned that they have a meeting scheduled with Smal’s agent for the following week to continue negotiations.

Regarding the reported interest from Rangers in Smal, Bruggink indicated that while he has heard about it, Twente has not received any direct communication from Rangers regarding their interest in the player.

Twente recently bolstered their left-back position by signing Anass Salah-Eddine from Ajax. Bruggink expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, describing Salah-Eddine as a talented player who they believe can contribute significantly to the team in the future. It’s noted that Salah-Eddine had been linked with Rangers before they pursued Jefte Vital of Fluminense instead.

Overall, Twente appears to be actively working on securing Smal’s future while also strengthening their squad in other areas, including the left-back position.

Ridvan Yilmaz still at Ibrox

Despite making signings in other positions, Rangers were unable to secure a new left-back during the transfer window. Although they were close to signing Jefte Vital, a potential deal worth around £400,000 fell through when APOEL Nicosia refused to terminate his loan spell in Cyprus.

As a result, Rangers are hesitant to sell Ridvan Yilmaz without securing a replacement. Galatasaray has shown interest in acquiring Yilmaz, reportedly offering around £2 million for the former Besiktas player. However, Rangers value Yilmaz at a minimum of £4 million, especially considering his exceptional performance at Ibrox.

With the Turkish transfer window still open until February 9th, there remains a possibility for further developments regarding Yilmaz’s future. Rangers’ stance indicates they are not willing to part ways with him unless their valuation is met or until they secure a suitable replacement.
