Championship relegation permutations: The results Birmingham City need to avoid League One

Published

on

Birmingham City are gearing up for a relegation shoot-out against Huddersfield Town this weekend.

Both teams are currently in the relegation zone, and both could be relegated this weekend if results go against them. Blues have fared marginally better than Huddersfield over the opening 44 games to accumulate 46 points, whereas the Terriers have 44.

Sheffield Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers lifted them above the bottom three and plunged Blues back into trouble. Plymouth Argyle and Blackburn aren’t out of the woods either.

Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers can mathematically still get relegated, but they both reached 50 points at the weekend with wins over Plymouth and Preston, respectively. A lot of results would need to go against Stoke or QPR to send them down to League One now. Huddersfield, Blues, Wednesday, Plymouth, and Blackburn are the teams in immediate danger.

**Relegation permutations**

**Blues will stay up if…**

While it is effectively out of Blues’ hands now because they have slipped beneath the dotted line, they should stay up if they win their remaining two matches. A win over Huddersfield on Saturday would relegate the Terriers and put Blues – who have a better goal difference than Sheffield Wednesday – on course for survival.

If Blues win both matches, they will stay up if Wednesday don’t take six points from matches against West Brom and Sunderland. Two Blues wins will also be enough for survival if Plymouth or Blackburn lose one of their remaining two games.

**Blues will go down if…**

There is a slim chance that Blues could be relegated this weekend. If Huddersfield beat Blues and Wednesday, Plymouth, and Blackburn all win, the club that bears the Second City’s name will start next season in League One.

Wins for Wednesday, Plymouth, and Blackburn would put Blues on the brink of relegation if they failed to beat Huddersfield. A draw can relegate Huddersfield, but it can’t mathematically send Blues down.

**How many points do Blues need?**

**47 points:** Blues will stay up with one more point as long as Sheffield Wednesday lose to both West Brom and Sunderland, and Huddersfield fail to win either of their remaining matches, due to their superior goal difference.

**48 points:** Provided Huddersfield take a maximum of four points from their final two games, including a draw against Blues, then Gary Rowett’s team would survive on goal difference if Wednesday only take one point from their final two matches.

**49 points:** A win at Huddersfield will be enough for Blues provided Wednesday don’t win another match. Blues will stay up on 49 points if Plymouth or Blackburn lose both of their remaining matches.

**50 points:** Four more points will be enough if Wednesday lose one of their remaining two matches due to Blues’ goal difference.

**52 points:** Blues will need to win both of their remaining games to stay up if Wednesday take four points and Plymouth and Blackburn record at least one win.
