Blues Trust reacts to Tony Mowbray exit with message for Birmingham City powerbrokers
After Birmingham City manager Tony Mowbray resigned due to illness, the Blues Trust honored him and asked owners Knighthead to appoint a successor who can ‘set the club on stable foundations and develop a positive culture’.
In order to complete his recuperation with his wife and three sons, Mowbray, 60, has made the decision to step back from management. This will enable Blues to name a new manager to guide them into League One. Due to Mowbray’s decision, Blues are able to “undertake a rigorous search process to discover the right leader to go our club forward,” according to Chief Executive Garry Cook.
The independent Birmingham City supporters trust, Blues Trust, released the following statement to BirminghamLive: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude and best wishes to Tony Mowbray on his resignation.
Even though he was only a temporary member of the team prior to his untimely health problems, he quickly won over supporters and demonstrated that he was a good and kind man. His predicament has made us realize what matters most in life: our family and our health.
“It seems characteristic of Tony to have decided against returning to work as soon as possible, allowing Birmingham City Football Club the finest opportunity to be ready for what we think will be a historic season in League 1.” In the not too distant future, we want to welcome him back to St Andrew’s and wish him a quick and complete recovery. We honor Tony Mowbray’s service and appreciate his kind words about our club.
“Now, it is up to Garry Cook, Tom Wagner, and the people in positions of authority to move mountains to pick our next manager—someone who can provide a stable environment for the team and foster a great culture inside it. Someone we can support and who will help us advance into a promising future. We think it must be a strategic choice based on our football history, our potential, and our capacity to grow into a dedicated and aggressive team. Our club is in a momentous moment, and we know Knighthead will make the right decision.
“We feel the decision gives us fresh opportunities and the possibility to chart a new course, with a youthful and vibrant team, even though it is a sad day for the club in many ways. As always, our fans have a long path ahead of us, but let’s celebrate where it can go as one cohesive fan group.”
